Plainsawn lumber will tend to contain more variation within and among boards. Also, since plainsawn wood is less dimensionally stable, the lumber will tend to expand and contract more across the width of the boards. The second type of cut that is used to make bella wood floors is the quartersawn cut. To make quartersawn flooring, the log is first cut into quarters and then sawn perpendicular to the growth rings. This cut produces a floor with a tight vertical grain which looks good and is very durable. When quartersawn flooring is introduced to changing humidity, the wood will expand and contract vertically instead of horizontally. This characteristic makes quartersawn flooring an ideal choice for installations over radiant floor heating. Bella wood floors can be installed by either the nail down method or the glue down method. Solid wood flooring can be installed using a nail down installation method. When the nail down method is used for bella wood floors, the flooring is attached to a tongue and groove plywood or a wooden subfloor using nails or staples. This method of installation is typically not used below grade because the subfloor is usually concrete. Please note that regardless of installation method, 3/4" solid wood flooring should not be installed below grade. The boards are then attached to the subfloor using either a manual or pneumatic nailer. The edge of the nailer is placed against the tongue of the board and the plunger is hit with the mallet. That will snug the two boards together and it drives a two-inch nail cleat through the tongue and into the subfloor. Whenever possible, it is best to use this method of installation when installing a bella wood floor or any other type of hardwood flooring. A glue-down installation method can be used on 3/8 inch solid wood flooring as well as engineered products. The wood floor is attached to a concrete or wooden subfloor using glue that has been applied using a notched trowel. This method of installation can be used below grade as well as any other level in the home. Page 2: The Beauty of Bella Wood Floors Continued... Related Articles
